Kingdom Life Recovery is a faith-based recovery program of Kingdom Life Ministry, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving Central Virginia since 2004.

Our Purpose

"Kingdom Life Recovery exists to give men a genuine second chance - not just a place to sleep, but a place to be transformed. We believe that with faith, structure, and community, any man can build a life worth living."

We are a faith-based, non-profit recovery program providing affordable transitional housing and recovery support for men returning to society in Central Virginia. Our program is rooted in the belief that transformation is possible for every man - regardless of his past.

Our Leadership

The Story Behind Kingdom Life Recovery

Kingdom Life Recovery was founded by Ken Barbour out of a conviction that men walking out of jails and prisons in Richmond were capable of far more than the system expected of them - they just needed someone to believe it first and give them a real place to land.

Today, the program is led by Director Ken Barbour and Assistant Director Gilbert Howard, who carry the same founding conviction: that stable housing, structure, and faith are the combination that actually works.

What began as a simple commitment became a structured program that has helped over 250 men successfully reintegrate into society - finding employment, restoring family relationships, and building lives grounded in faith.

Today, Kingdom Life Recovery operates out of 3011 Chamberlayne Ave, Richmond, VA 23227 - a real home, in a real neighborhood, offering men the chance to become a real part of their community again.

"We started Kingdom Life Recovery because we knew what these men were capable of. They just needed a place where someone believed that before they did."

— Ken Barbour, Founder

Faith at the Center

Kingdom Life Recovery is explicitly Christian in its foundation - but our doors are open to any man who is ready to change.

What We Believe

We believe that lasting transformation comes from within - and that for most men, that starts with a spiritual awakening. Our program integrates faith, accountability, and community in a way that gives men more than coping strategies. It gives them a reason to change.

Bible study, prayer, and fellowship are central to daily life at KLM Recovery. But we don't force faith - we create the environment where it can grow naturally.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

2 Corinthians 5:17

Open to All Men Ready to Change

You don't have to be a Christian to come to Kingdom Life Recovery. You don't have to have any prior faith background at all. What you do need is a genuine desire to change - and the willingness to engage with the structure and community of our program.

Many men who arrive skeptical leave with a faith they never expected. And all of them leave with tools, relationships, and a foundation they didn't have before.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these."

Mark 12:30–31
Eligibility Note: Men must be genuinely committed to recovery and willing to participate in faith-based programming. This is a program - not just housing. See our Who We Serve page for full eligibility details.
What We Stand For

Our Core Values

Faith

We believe in the transforming power of a relationship with God. That belief shapes everything we do.

Dignity

Every man who walks through our door deserves to be treated with respect - regardless of what he's done or where he's been.

Accountability

Structure saves lives. We hold men accountable - not because we don't trust them, but because we do.

Community

Nobody heals alone. We build a brotherhood where men support, challenge, and celebrate each other.

Transformation

We don't manage brokenness - we pursue genuine change. We believe every man can become who he was created to be.

Accessibility

Cost should never be the reason a man can't get help. We keep our rates the lowest in Richmond. Period.
